Welcome to the renal rotation. During your two-week elective, you will encounter patients with renal disease, acid-base and electrolyte disturbances, hypertension, hemo- and peritoneal dialysis, and point-of-care ultrasonography. Nephrology is a broad field with multiple areas involved given the many roles of the kidney including anemia (hematology), mineral bone disease/hyperparathyroidism (endocrine), and hypertension (ambulatory care).
Objectives
- Educate house staff on nephrology-related topics required to be a competent internist
- Expose house staff to dialysis/other forms of renal replacement
- Teach house staff how to perform point of care ultrasound pertaining to lung and kidneys
Structure
- During this two-week rotation, house staff will be working in inpatient settings at the VA, where, with the nephrology fellow, they will address consults for patients in the wards and ICU.
- On Tuesday/Thursday afternoons, house staff will rotate in our kidney disease clinic at the VA.
- On either Monday or Friday afternoon, depending on didactics, house staff will learn how to perform and generally interpret point of care ultrasound views within the realm of kidney pathology.
- On Wednesday afternoon, residents will attend the fellow didactics, followed by renal grand rounds.
